Instagram Glitch 365
Glitches// Glitching Software// Glitch Art

So, Instagram Glitch 365 is an on-going project that I'm currently working on and will be working on for a total of 365 days. (If all goes to plan.) I started uploading some of my work to Instagram at the end of 2019, I know, I was super early to Insagram, and I noticed that the images I was uploading had the tendency to start showing Glitches. I got intrigued by this. I wanted to learn why, how and when images uploaded to Instagram would start glitching and so I started this project in order to learn more about it.

I had a theory as to why the images were displaying the glitches I was encountering. My guess is that it has to do with the image image compression algorithm. "Image compression is the process of encoding or converting an image file in such a way that it consumes less space than the original file. It is a type of compression technique that reduces the size of an image file without affecting or degrading its quality to a greater extent."

I created a basic image with an explanation in it that I wanted to glitch to pieces through Instagram's image processing, however, it did not turn out the way I expected.
So this is the basic image I made. I tried to make it as visually complex as possible so that there would be many assets in the image that could start displaying glitches. However, as you can see in the first result below, Instagram somehow ghosted the base image through the photo I uploaded. These glitches only appear when making multi-image posts on Instagram. I'll keep trying out different things and posting the results.
Eventually, after a week or two, the second image started showing glitches. This time it wasn't as clear which image was ghosted through the original image. This one seems a bit more random. I still have no clue what's causing this to happen in the Instagram algorithms but I've found that it's more likely to happen when you also upload a video in the same multi-image post.
