About the project: In a world striving for inclusivity, my project offers a simple yet impactful way for people with physical and cognitive disabilities to engage with their environment. It's about providing a space where they can have some control, albeit modest, over their surroundings, enriching their experience through interactive play.
How does it work?
At its core, my installation features a rotating wooden disk adorned with LED-lit plastic balls emitting a calming blue light. This setup serves as a canvas for users to interact with, giving them a chance to influence its movement through their actions or sounds.
Powered by an Arduino Uno microcontroller, the system detects even the subtlest cues, ensuring accessibility for individuals with varying degrees of mobility and communication abilities. It's not about grand gestures but rather about creating moments of joy and empowerment through modest interactions.
Why is this important?
Before embarking on this project, I sought guidance from experts in the field of disability studies. I reached out to Syta van der Werken and Ans van Dinteren to gain insights into how I could create something meaningful for the community of people with physical and cognitive disabilities. Their expertise and guidance were invaluable in shaping the direction of my project, ensuring that it was both accessible and beneficial to its intended audience.
I believe that everyone, regardless of their limitations, deserves the opportunity to engage with the world around them in meaningful ways. While my project isn't a cure-all solution, it's a step towards fostering agency and enjoyment for those who interact with it.
This project reflects my dedication to inclusivity and the power of simple yet effective solutions. It's not about grandiose claims but rather about creating spaces where everyone can find moments of connection and control.
Join me in celebrating the beauty of simple interactions and the impact they can have on the lives of individuals of all abilities.
